religious Trauma & Deconstruction Therapy

Welcome to

Explore and heal from damaging, traumatic, or complex experiences with religious systems and communities with Religious Trauma and Deconstruction Therapy.

When your experiences with religion have been painful, confusing, or traumatic, it can be difficult to sort through the impacts on your wellbeing and relationships. Therapy with a clinician with both professional expertise and personal experience with religious trauma and deconstruction can be a catalyst for healing.

I’m Hannah Boggs-Nieman, LMFTA, and I support individuals and couples in processing and healing from difficult experiences connected to religion. I’m here not only to help you further understand how your experiences have affected you but also to partner with you in imagining what could make life even more meaningful and fulfilling for you in this season.

Support Is Here

Due to the intimate, psychological, and relational nature of many religious systems and communities, hurt, confusion, and trauma connected to religion can be significant and long-lasting. Recovering from difficult experiences with religion can feel isolating and disorienting--you may feel misunderstood in religious communities as well as secular ones, or
perhaps you have shared and processed with trusted folks in your life, but you still feel
stuck or tender in some way.

Therapy with a trained professional can provide a safe space to experience validation, exploration, and often, a necessary grieving process for related losses – perhaps the loss of relationships or the loss of what life could have been like without the hurt or trauma. For many, the next step is discerning and dreaming up what one may like to build in life, whether it’s solidifying values and beliefs or cultivating practices around spirituality or community.

My approach as a Religious Trauma and Deconstruction Therapist centers compassion, curiosity, and reverence for your unique experiences and journey. With both a professional and personal background in spirituality and religious trauma and deconstruction, I bring a nonjudgmental ear to our conversations and a respect for your beliefs and decisions around spirituality and religious communities. Whether you choose to stay connected to a religious tradition in some capacity or move on from organized religion altogether, I will honor your values and support what feels safe and meaningful to you.

Let's Get Started

I work with a variety of folks impacted by their experiences with religion, including:
~individuals and couples impacted by the Evangelical Purity Movement
~LGBTQIA+ folks and/or polyamorous folks whose (past) religious tradition has felt condemning of their experiences of love and identity
~those interested in exploring meaning in this season of life or feeling lost

around how to understand God or spirituality
~partners navigating the influences of their upbringings on their relationship,

differences in belief, or challenges to finding meaningful community

In addition to working with folks around religious trauma and deconstruction, I also enjoy
working with partners and individual adults with concerns in a variety of areas such as
sexuality, premarital counseling, and navigating relationships with family as an adult.
